Revenue with 80% losses - January 2021

Summary

The tourist accommodation sector registered 308.4 thousand guests and 709.9 thousand overnight stays in January 2021, corresponding to year-on-year rates of change of -78.3% and -78.2% respectively (-71.2% and -72.6% in December, in the same order). Overnight stays of residents declined by 60.3% (-54.2% in December) and those of non-residents decreased by 87.0% (-83.2% in the previous month).
The net bed occupancy rate (9.4%) decreased by 19.7 p.p. (-18.7 p.p. in December).
Total revenue in tourism accommodation establishments amounted to EUR 33.0 million and revenue from accommodation stood at EUR 24.0 million, corresponding to rates of change of -81.2% and -80.8%, respectively ( 73.9% and -74.4% in December, in the same order).
The average revenue per available room (RevPAR) amounted to EUR 7.0 in January, corresponding to a decrease of 71.9% (-63.6% in December). The average daily rate (ADR) reached EUR 54.6, which resulted in a variation of -19.8% (-14.3% in December).
In January 2021, considering the whole set of means of accommodation (tourist accommodation establishments, camping and holiday camps and youth hostels), there were 332.0 thousand guests and 849.6 thousand overnight stays, corresponding to rates of change of -77.7% and -75.9%, respectively (-70.4% and -70.3% in December, in the same order).
 
Despite the circumstances determined by the COVID-19 pandemic, Statistics Portugal calls for the best collaboration by companies, families and public entities in responding to Statistics Portugal’s data requests. The quality of official statistics, particularly its ability to identify the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, crucially depends on this collaboration, which Statistics Portugal thanks in advance.
