HOSPITAL: Health establishment with both in and out-patient care, and endowed with diagnostic and therapeutical resources, with the purpose of providing the population with healing and rehabilitation medical assistance. It is also qualified for preventing disease, health care teaching and scientific research.

PERSONS EMPLOYED IN A HEALTH ESTABLISHMENT (STAFF CENSUS): Professionals that participate in the activity of the health establishment on the last day of the reference period, irrespective of the duration of this participation, under the following conditions: a) persons linked to the health establishment by a labour agreement and receiving a remuneration; b) persons linked to other institutions but working and directly paid by the health establishment; c) persons in the previous circumstances although temporarily absent for a month or less because on holiday, ordue to a labour dispute, profissional training, ilness or accident at work. The following situations do not correspond to persons employed in the health establishment: i) persons in the circumstances described in points a) and b) but temporarily absent for more than a month; ii) persons linked to the health establishment but working and directly paid by other institutions; iii) any other persons working at the health establishment but paid by other institutions (e.g. persons linked to a temporary job agency); iv) self-employed persons (e.g. service providers); v) volunteers.

REFERENCE PERIOD: Period to which the information refers and which may be a specific day or a time interval (month, fiscal year, calendar year, among others).
