Concepts
  • SURFACE WATER:  Water which flows over, or rests on the surface of a land mass, natural watercourses such as rivers, streams, brooks, lakes, etc., as well as artificial watercourses such as irrigation, industrial and navigation canals, drainage systems, alluvium (subsurface water) and natural and artificial reservoirs. Excluded are sea-water, permanent bodies of stagnant water both natural and artificial, and transitional waters, such as brackish swamps, lagoons and estuaries.
  • REFERENCE PERIOD:  Period to which the information refers and which may be a specific day or a time interval (month, fiscal year, calendar year, among others).
  • CHEMICAL STATUS:  Indicator that reflects the assessment of chemicals existence which, in natural conditions, would be absent or present in reduced concentrations on a surface water body, and are likely to cause significant damage to water environment, human health, fauna and flora, due to their characteristics of persistence, toxicity and bioaccumulation.
Measure unit (symbol) Number (No.)
Power of 10  0
Observations The Indicator translates the combination between the status/ ecological potential and the chemical status of surface water bodies (natural or artificial) and corresponds to the worst state evaluated between the two.
