Concepts
  • DEATH:  The permanent disappearance of vital functions.
  • UNDERLYING CAUSE OF DEATH:  The disease or injury that initiated the train of morbid events leading directly to death or the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the injury.
  • REFERENCE PERIOD:  The length of time for which data are collected, e.g. a specific day, month or year.
  • AVERAGE POPULATION:  The average population during a calendar year, generally calculated as the arithmetic mean of the population on two consecutive years.
  • EUROPEAN STANDARD POPULATION:  Theoretical population, adding up to a total of 100,000, widely used to produce European age-standardized rates in order to compensate for differences in age structure between different countries.
Definition STANDARDIZED MORTALITY RATE BY AGE (65 and more years) - It involves the application of crude death rate by age (65 and more years), a standard population (65 and more years) whose age structure is fixed and distributed in the same age groups the crude death rates (expressed as deaths per 100 000 inhabitants). The calculus is based on standard European population (2013 version) defined by EUROSTAT.
As a rule, the mortality rates are not calculated when the place of residence or age are unknown.
Formule [Total of expected deaths (age = 65 and more years)/ Standard population deaths (age = 65 and more years)]*100 000
Measure unit (symbol) Number (No.)
Power of 10  0
Observations Direct method of standardization.
