Concepts
  • EUROPEAN STANDARD POPULATION:  Theoretical population, adding up to a total of 100,000, widely used to produce European age-standardized rates in order to compensate for differences in age structure between different countries.
  • DEATH:  The permanent disappearance of vital functions.
  • UNDERLYING CAUSE OF DEATH:  The disease or injury that initiated the train of morbid events leading directly to death or the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the injury.
  • POTENCIAL YEARS OF LIFE LOST:  Number of years that theoretically a certain population ceases to live if dying prematurely.
  • REFERENCE PERIOD:  The length of time for which data are collected, e.g. a specific day, month or year.
  • AVERAGE POPULATION:  The average population during a calendar year, generally calculated as the arithmetic mean of the population on two consecutive years.
Definition Ratio of the result of the sum of the products between the rates of potential lost years of life and the standard population) by the total European standard population up to 70 years per 100 000 inhabitants.
As a rule, this rates are not calculated when the place of residence or age are unknown.
Formule Ratio (Rate of potential years of life lost*Standard population)/ Total European standard population under 70*100 000
