Cobertura de áreas marinhas protegidas relativamente às áreas marinhas (dados proxy ) Portugal tem no mar um património natural de valor incalculável, incluindouma imensa riquezageológica e biológica, que tem procurado proteger e gerir, entre outros, através da criação de áreas marinhas protegidas (AMP). A primeira AMP foi designada em 1971, o Arquipélago das Ilhas Selvagens, e 10 anos depois foi estabelecidaaprimeiraAMPnoContinente, a Reserva Natural das Berlengas. No entanto, a maioria das AMP foram estabelecidas na última década, fundamentalmente em zonas costeiras e, mais recentemente, AMP oceânicas (para além do mar territorial). OPlano Estratégico 2011-2020 daConvenção sobre a Diversidade Biológica estabeleceu que até 2020 pelo menos 10% das áreas marinhas e costeiras, especialmente áreas de particular importância para a biodiversidade e os serviços dos ecossistemas, são conservadas através da designação de redes de áreas marinhas protegidas, ecologicamente representativas e bem conectadas. Portugal has in the sea an invaluable natural heritage, including an immense geological and biological wealth, which it has sought to protect and manage through, inter alia, the creation of marine protected areas (MPAs). The first MPA was designated in 1971, the Archipelago of the Selvagens Islands, and 10 years later the first MPA was established in the mainland, the Berlengas Natural Reserve. However, most MPAs were established in the last decade, basically in coastal areas and, more recently, oceanic MPAs (beyond the territorial sea). The Strategic Plan 2011-2020 of the Convention on Biological Diversity established that by 2020 at least 10 per cent of coastal and marine areas, especially areas of particular importance for biodiversity and ecosystem services, are conserved through effectively and equitably managed ecologically representative and well-connected systems.
