Ecosystemservices providedby terrestrial ecosystems offermany benefits to society, including recreation, natural resources, clean air and water, as well as protection from natural disasters and mitigation of climate change. In particular, Forests account for 30 percent of the Earth’s surface (35.4%vis-á-vis the national geographical area in 2010), fulfilling a number of functions that are vital for humanity, including the provision of goods (wood and nonwood forest products) and services such as habitat for biodiversity, carbon sequestration, coastal protection and soil and water conservation.
