In turn, the mortality rate increases in the population aged 65 and over, especially for men, with rates of 23.4 per 100,000 in the 65-74 age group, 43.7 between 75 and 84 years and 65.2 among people aged 85 or more, in 2017. By region, Alentejo registered systematically the highest rates in the country, no matter the decreasing trend having remained in 2017, with 19.9 per 100,000 inhabitants, vis-à-vis 2015 (26.5 per 100,000) and 2010 (25.7 per 100,000). In 2017, there was also a significant increase in the suicide rate in the Algarve (18.4 per 100,000 compared to 13.8 in the previous year). In 2015, the suicide mortality rate in Portugal (10.9 per 100,000) was close to the EU28 average (11.0).
