Summary

The tourist accommodation sector registered 2.5 million guests and 7.5 million overnight stays in August 2021, corresponding to increases of 35.6% and 47.6% respectively (+60.4% and +73.0% in July, in the same order). The levels reached in August 2021 were, however, lower than those observed in August 2019, having decreased the number of guests and overnight stays by 23.6% and 22.1%, respectively.
In August, the domestic market contributed with 4.2 million overnight stays, the highest monthly value ever recorded, having increased by 24.2%. External markets grew by 94.5% amounting to 3.3 million overnight stays. Compared with August 2019, there was a growth of 22.6% in overnight stays of residents and a decrease of 46.9% in overnight stays of non-residents.
The total revenue registered in the tourist accommodation establishments amounted to EUR 515.8 million and the revenue from accommodation was EUR 410.2 million. Compared with August 2019, total revenue decreased by 19.2% and revenue from accommodation declined by 19.3%. The average revenue per available room (RevPAR) was EUR 71.4 in August (EUR 40.2 in July). The average daily rate (ADR) amounted to EUR 115.8 in August (EUR 98.7 in July). In August 2019, the RevPAR and the ADR amounted to EUR 84.4 and EUR 116.2, respectively.
This month, the bedroom occupancy rate was 61.6%, 15.0 p.p. above August 2020, although 11.0 p.p. below the racio registered in August 2019 (72.6%).
In the first eight months of the year, there were increases of 25.0% in total revenue and 27.2% in revenue from accommodation. Compared to the same period of 2019, the rates of change registered were -57.1% and -56.7%, respectively.
Between January and August 2021, considering the whole set of accommodation (tourist accommodation establishments, camping and holiday camps, and youth hostels), there were 8.8 million guests and 23.9 million overnight stays, corresponding to rates of change of +8.1% and +11.8%, respectively.
