Number of new enterprises starts to increase, after the 2020 decrease caused by the COVID-19 pandemic

Summary

Between March and April 2020, the number of active enterprises recorded the largest decrease in the period January 2018 - August 2021 (-18.3%), coinciding with the first lockdown decreed under the COVID-19 pandemic, affecting mainly the individual enterprises. On the other hand, between February and June 2021, there was the highest growth of active enterprises in the last 4 years (+19.9%), having reached the maximum monthly value for this period in June 2021, with 892,597 enterprises. Active companies recorded, on average, successive increases over this period: +5.0% in 2019, +1.2% in 2020 and +1.8% in 2021.

The minimum value of the monthly number of births was reached in April 2020, with 7,194 enterprises born in that month. Between 2018 and 2020, January was the month with the highest number of monthly births of companies, 4,109 in 2018, 5,541 in 2019 and 4,808 in 2020.

Transport and Storage, Information and communication and Other Services sectors recorded the highest monthly average birth rates during the period under review.

The highest birth rates were registered in the Área Metropolitana de Lisboa and in the Norte. These two regions represented, on average, 65.6% of the total number of births in the reference period.
