Censuses 2011 reveal the greatest surplus of dwellings in Portugal

Summary
In 2011 the number of dwellings in Portugal exceeded in almost 50% the number of families (+1.8 million dwellings in relation to the number of families).
Around 32% of existing dwellings were secondary residences or vacant, which represents an increase of 2.7 p.p. between 2001 and 2011.
Nearly half of vacant dwellings that were available for sale were built during the last decade.
Only 12% of dwellings available for rent were located in modern buildings (built after 2001).
The number of owners with house purchase financial burden increased by 48% in the last decade, and represented already 43% of owners in 2011.
