CPI annual rate of change is -0.1% - August 2019

Summary

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) annual rate was -0.1% in August 2019 (-0.3% in July). This evolution is in part due to the positive contribution of changes in the prices of Restaurants and hotels, while in the opposite direction, the reductions of prices for Fuels were more pronounced in August than in the previous month. The annual core inflation rate, which excludes energy and unprocessed food products, was 0.2% (-0.1% in the previous month).
The CPI monthly rate was -0.1% (-1.3% in the previous month and -0.3% in August 2018), while the CPI 12-month average rate was 0.6% (0.7% in July).
The annual coefficient to be used in the update of residential rents in 2020, calculated using CPI data until August, is 1.0051.
In August 2019, the Portuguese Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) annual rate was -0.1% (-0.7% in the previous month). This rate is 1.1 percentage points (p.p.) below the figure estimated by Eurostat for the Euro area (in the previous month, this difference was 1.7 p.p.).
