The tourist accommodation sector registered 1.9 million guests and 5.1 million overnight stays in August 2020, corresponding to year-on-year rates of change of -43.2% and -47.1% respectively (-63.8% and -67.8% in July 2020, in the same order). Overnight stays of residents declined by 2.1% (-29.4% in July) and those of non-residents decreased by 72.0% (-84.7% in the previous month).
Total revenue recorded a rate of change of -48.9% (-69.8% in July) standing at EUR 326.5 million. Revenue from accommodation amounted to EUR 258.5 million, declining by 49.2% (-69.8% in the previous month).
In August, 21.2% of the tourist accommodation establishments were closed or had no movement of guests (29.7% in July).
In August, when considering the whole set of means of accommodation (tourist accommodation establishments, camping and holiday camps, and youth hostels), there were 2.3 million guests and 6.4 million overnight stays, corresponding to rates of change of -42.7% and -46.1% respectively (-61.5% and -64.6% in July, in the same order).
This press release includes a specific analysis on the impact of the opening of the air corridor between the UK and Portugal in August. The opening of the air corridor with Portugal might have contributed to the recovery that took place in August, when there was a 79.8% reduction in the number of overnight stays of UK residents, after four months with decreases of over 90%.
