Norte continued to record the highest life expectancy at birth and Área Metropolitana de Lisboa the highest life expectancy at 65 years - 2018-2020

Summary

Life expectancy at birth in Portugal was estimated at 81.06 years for total population, 78.07 years for men and 83.67 years for women, for the period 2018-2020.
At birth, life expectancy continues to be higher for women, but the difference for men has been declining and is now 5.60 years (compared to 6.02 in 2008-2010).
By regions NUTS 2, the Norte recorded the highest values of life expectancy at birth for total population (81.46 years) and for men (78.55 years), and Centro had the highest values for women (84.00).
The greatest differences in longevity between men and women were observed in the Região Autónoma da Madeira (6.89) and Região Autónoma dos Açores (6.82), while the lowest were observed in Área Metropolitana de Lisboa (5.41) and Norte (5.44).
By regions NUTS 3, the highest life expectancies at birth were recorded in Cávado (82.10 years), Região de Coimbra (81.58 years) and Região de Leiria (81.57 years).
Life expectancy at age 65 in Portugal reached 19.69 years. Men aged 65 may expect to live on average 17.76 years more and women 21.11 years more.
By regions NUTS 2, the highest values of life expectancy at age 65 were recorded in Área Metropolitana de Lisboa (19.97 years), and for both men (18.05 years) and women (21.54 years).
The three regions NUTS 3 with the longest longevity at 65 age 65 were: Região de Coimbra (20.39 years), Terras de Trás-os-Montes (20.28 years) and Alto Tâmega (20.25 years).
