Severe draught causes heavy losses in agriculture - January 2005
18 February 2005

Summary
On 31 January early estimates point to the decline in surface cultivated of durum wheat, partly offset by the increase in surface cultivated of common wheat, but also by the rise in surface cultivated of barley and triticale. As regards olive trees, prospects on the quality and quantity of olives for olive oil suggest a good olive oil season. The severe draught, tending to extreme draught in the South, is acting adversely on agriculture, in particular on livestock farming. In fact, the deterioration of grazing conditions has negatively affected the livestock production and has led to extraordinary recourse to industrial feed as supplement.
