Tourist travel by residents declines in the first quarter of 2006, influenced by the Easter effect - 1st Quarter 2006
27 June 2006

Summary
In the first quarter of 2006 Portuguese residents made a total of 2.9 million trips, which represented a negative year-on-year change of -14.7%. The main factor behind this decline was probably the effect of the changing timing of the Easter holidays that, in 2005, occurred in the first quarter, whereas in the present year it fell on April. In this period, the Centre was the major destination of residents, accounting for 27.3% of total overnight stays, followed by Lisboa (25.5%) and the Norte Region (18.4%).
