Summary

In October 2023, the tourist accommodation sector accounted for 2.9 million guests (+8.7%) and 7.4 million overnight stays (+8.5%), generating EUR 584.2 million in total revenue (+17.4%) and EUR 441.2 million in revenue from accommodation (+18.8%). Compared to October 2019, more significant increases continue to be recorded, 49.4% in total revenue and 52.2% in revenue from accommodation.

The revenue per available room (RevPAR) stood at EUR 69.6 (+14.1%; +38.6% compared to 2019) and the average daily rate (ADR) amounted to EUR 111.6 (+11.0%; +32.4% compared to 2019). The ADR reached its highest value in AM Lisboa (EUR 151.0), followed by Norte (EUR 111.5), Alentejo (EUR 98.5) and RA Madeira (EUR 97.7). 

Among the municipalities weighing the most in terms of the total number of overnight stays, Albufeira stands out (share of 11.1%), as it surpassed 2019 levels (+1.0%), for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, registering increases from both residents (+2.8%) and non-residents (+0.8%).

In the accumulated period from January to October 2023, the total number of overnight stays grew by 11.0% (+1.6% for residents and +15.6% for non-residents), which corresponded to increases of 20.8% in total revenue and 22.1% in revenue from accommodation (+39.9% and +42.7%, respectively, compared to the same period in 2019). The accumulated revenue up to October has already exceeded the annual total for 2022, reflecting the evolution of demand and the prices of the services provided.

Regarding all means of accommodation (tourist accommodation establishments, camping and holiday camps, and youth hostels), there were 28.7 million guests and 76.0 million overnight stays from January to October 2023, corresponding to growths of 13.1% and 10.7%, respectively. Compared to the same period in 2019, overnight stays increased by 9.0% (+7.4% for residents and +9.8% for non-residents).
