The ageing process continues in the Portuguese population. The low fertility levels and the increase of longevity are the demographic factors that explain the intensity of the phenomenon.
This article presents the substantial changes observed in population structures and the expected trends for the coming decades. A set of indicators on ageing is used to identify the regional differences of the
phenomenon.
