Atlas of Portuguese cities - 2002
Issue year: 2002

Summary
For the first time INE publishes an Atlas of Portuguese Cities. This publication gathers a set of data for the existing 134 cities of the country and for the metropolitan areas of Oporto and Lisbon. The information of the Atlas is, in most part, from the Census 2001. These data are analysed at the maximum territorial level, that is to say, at the level of statistical sub-section. The remaining data derives from INE surveys and is presented with a breakdown up to the parish (freguesia) level. For each of the 134 cities the information is available in tables, graphs and maps and is distributed on the publication thematically by four pages. Thus, the first page presents the cartographic elements from which it is possible to visualize the geographic limits of the city, its location in the county (concelho) and in the country. The following pages characterize the city by presenting indicators on Population (second page), on Economic Activity (third page) and on Housing and Living Conditions (forth page). For some indicators the publication provides the average figures on cities and on Portugal, allowing the user several comparisons.
