voltarEUROPEAN STATISTICS DAY IS
A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY
TO HIGHLIGHT THE VALUE OF
OFFICIAL STATISTICS THAT
EVERYBODY CAN RELY ON:
POLICY MAKERS, POLITICIANS,
THE MEDIA, BUSINESSES,
ORGANISATIONS, RESEARCHERS
AND CITIZENS.
ESAC represents these different types of users, and for me it
was an honour and a pleasure to celebrate European Statistics
Day in a wonderful city in a magnificent building. I was struck
by the involvement and knowledge of the speakers, and by the
audience, the number of people present and their interest in
the topic.
European Statistics Day is an excellent occasion to tackle
some of the challenges faced by statistics. How can we convey
the importance of high quality data, and show that the costs of
good statistics outweigh the cost of no data or bad data to build
decisions on? How can we find a balance between accuracy and
timeliness? How can we make statistical reports more attractive
to the general public, and how can we turn non-users of statistics
into users? How can we provide more open data while protecting
confidentiality and privacy?
These problems were not solved in Lisbon, but a clear shared
message of the meeting was that we are willing to try to make
our societies better through better data.
