Welcome to the Conference on "The Value of Official Statistics as a Public Good" and to the celebration of the 2017 European Statistics Day (ESD).

The Conference, to be held in Lisbon, in the morning of 20 October, is pleasantly co-organized by the European Statistical Advisory Committee (ESAC), the Portuguese Statistical Society and Statistics Portugal, and sponsored by Eurostat.The availability of relevant, credible and easily accessible official statistics to all citizens is an essential pillar of a democratic society.

Therefore, a relevant instrument for the consolidation of the European Union as a balanced economic, social and environmental area has been the development of strong and credible European and National statistical systems ensuring high quality official statistics with a high degree of comparability among countries and regions.

Moreover, one of the remarkable phenomena in this new millennium is the exponential increase of the production and use of data at a global scale, enlarging and challenging the traditional role of official statistics and encouraging the dialogue between statisticians and users/stakeholders all over the world. The informative value of official statistics is consequently increasing significantly.

The upcoming European Statistics Day is a truly, opportune and useful occasion to debate "The value of official statistics as a public good".

The Executive Committee will be very pleased with your participation in the Conference, a further step towards reinforcing the role of European statistics in our societies as a driver for prosperity.

Bem-vindos à Conferência sobre “Estatísticas Oficiais, um Bem Público” e à celebração do Dia Europeu da Estatística, 2017.

O Comité Consultivo Europeu da Estatística (ESAC), a Sociedade Portuguesa de Estatística e o Instituto Nacional de Estatística de Portugal têm o enorme prazer de organizar esta Conferência, que conta com o apoio do Eurostat, e que terá lugar em Lisboa, na manhã do dia 20 de outubro.

A existência de estatísticas oficiais relevantes, fiáveis e facilmente acessíveis por todos os cidadãos constitui um pilar essencial de uma sociedade democrática.

O desenvolvimento de sistemas estatísticos credíveis, quer a nível da União Europeia, quer a nível nacional, capazes de assegurar a disponibilização de estatísticas oficiais de elevada qualidade, comparáveis entre os Estados-membros e as suas regiões, tem-se revelado um instrumento fundamental para a consolidação de um espaço europeu equilibrado, económica, social e ambientalmente.

Neste novo milénio, o aumento exponencial da produção e utilização de dados, à escala global, surge como um fenómeno notável, alargando e desafiando o papel tradicional das estatísticas oficiais e fomentando o diálogo entre estatísticos e utilizadores/stakeholders em todo o mundo. O valor informativo das estatísticas oficiais tem, consequentemente, vindo a aumentar de forma significativa.

O próximo Dia Europeu da Estatística constitui uma importante e oportuna ocasião para debater o valor das Estatísticas oficiais como um bem público, com vista a reforçar o papel das Estatísticas Europeias enquanto instrumento importante para a prosperidade das nossas sociedades.
